So, why on Earth have Fallout 4, an open world game that released last month on PC and current generation consoles, and Itchy Feet, a vintage dance night touring round 25 cities in the UK including Exeter’s very own Unit 1, been put together? And, it’s not just because I have nothing better to do, or the fact that both take place in bleak, post-apocalyptic wastelands.
It’s the music: both have a smattering of excellent 50s tunes to get your feet a-tappin’ and your hands a-clappin’. Fallout is well know for having an excellent range of the very best swing, jazz and rock that you’ll also find on your typical night of Itchy hedonism. Since Fallout 3, each game in Bethesda Softwork’s beloved series has had its own radio station, and, in the case of Fallout 4, Diamond City Radio is blaring around every corner of the Commonwealth.
Itchy Feet organisers, pre-drinks playlist compilers, take note. Whether your tipple is an ice-cold Nuka Cola Quantum (with a little sprinkling of Jet, there’s no judgement here) or a simple, reliable VK, here are six of the best songs featured in Fallout 4 to get the party going. Or, equally, as the ideal soundtrack to you giving some thieving raiders a slice of their own violent medicine:
Ray Smith – Right Behind You Baby
Now, we’ll, of course, need to be getting the night started off in just the right way, and Ray Smith is the perfect way to do it. Released by the rockabilly singer in 1958, the energetic sound of ‘Right Behind You Baby’ will be the best way of to get you right off your seat and dance away those deadline blues. When this comes on, everybody else will be, well, right behind you.
Connie Allen – Rocket 69
After good ol’ Ray gets you onto the dance floor, Connie Allen, backed up Todd Rhodes and his Toddlers, will keep you there with some punchy saxophone blues. Or you’ll leave it in search of a spot of ‘Rocket 69’, whatever that means.
Ella Fitzgerald – Undecided
Ella Fitzgerald, known as the First Lady of Song and Queen of Jazz will be the jewel in the crown of your Itchy Feet Spotify playlist. Hips will be shaken and skirts will be swished in this bewitchingly jazzy gem.
The Five Stars – Atom Bomb Baby
A great sing-along tune, even if it’s essentially comparing a girl to the impending total annihilation of planet Earth. Five stars for setting the mood guys.
Nat King Cole – Orange Colored Sky
Now this is the song you’ll want to come on once you’ve spotted that special someone on the dance floor. Nat King Cole’s liquid gold vocals set against big band solos is wonderful to enjoy with a partner (I assume). Don’t say I never do you any favours.
Warren Smith – Uranium Rock
And, to end the night with a bang (which might not necessarily be the ‘Rocket 69’ kind, don’t despair). With a lively dose of jazzy rock, Warren Smith’s classic could be the best chance of the night to, “have a rocking good time and throw it all away”.
